Politics vs' Art

Well what a weekend it was! With our political future in limbo, one thing that is clear this Monday morning is the weekend arts wrap-up.

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra is still undergoing a revamp. When its finished it will arguably be the premier gallery space of Indigenous art in the country. For an example of the exemplary work it will display read  here.

Crime and art collide with Poppy Flowers by Vincent Van Gogh being stolen for a second time on the weekend.

The Public Works image of the week is a wonderful piece you may have seen before. Shown at Sculpture by the Sea, the annual sculpture exhibition held at Cottesloe beach, Mitsuo Takeuchi's, Transfiguration Screw was seen in 2009.
Until I see you in art history, have a good week. Make sure you have three of the five artist sheets ready for submission in your art history lesson this week
Happy working

Best Weekend Australian EVER

I know, it's a big statement, but I'll stand by it for the following reasons,
  1. A wonderful story of one of Australia's great Indigenous talents, Western desert painter Jimmy Donegan
  2. Two cultures clashed when sketches by Pre-Raphaelite Brother, Millias were found in a Led Zeppelin cover owned by Jimmy Page's chauffeur. This made me want to watch the ABC series "Desperate Romantics" about the dynamic, seedy, bohemian world of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood all over again
  3. Art is getting a little political with the redesigning of the iconic Redheads matches
  4. Articles on art theft are always fascinating
  5. As always Public Works is here for you to practise image analysis. This week on Archibald Prize artist Cherry Hood's Joshua, and lastly
  6. The exhibition of the week is straight from Sydney. For budding photographers Alfred Stieglitz's amazing tonal studies is a must see.
Phew... I'm exhausted from all the weekend reading! Enjoy
Happy working

Arts wrap up

Hi all!
It's great to be blogging again. So a lot has been happening in the local arts scene while I have been off-line.
Firstly there is a new Artistic Director for our festival. Perth International Arts Festival is delighted to announce the appointment of Jonathan Holloway, one of the UK’s most successful festival leaders, to the position of Artistic Director for 2012 to 2015.

An article you may like to read from the weekend, is the Public Works article from The Weekend Australian. This will be especially interesting if your interested in sculpture.

If you need to practise you're analysis skills this week's Public Works image is currently
in the vertical file in the MSC library.
Lastly you will be given the outline for your semester two Investigation Case Study this week. As this is a great opportunity to submit work early and receive valuable feedback, gain more marks and select artists that inspire you please start this case study THIS WEEK.
This website, as well as the artist links listed at the right of screen should be valuable resources for the task.

Happy working,

Weekend Arts Wrap-up

Welcome back from your first MSC exam break. What a two weeks it has been! I hope you have rested over the weekend and are ready to kick off an awesome semester two, full of Visual Art goodness.
An article you may have missed on the weekend, was an update on Visual Art ledgend, Pop Artist of the past and current Art celebrity, David Hockney's latest exhibition. Embracing new technologies, specifically Apple's new ipad, Hockney states
"The iPad is many things, but one is a very useful new visual tool," he says. "There is a dark side to it. It doesn't take too much imagination to see it will get thinner, perhaps even like a piece of paper, and then they might be compulsory; an iPad passport with your whole life story in it, a sinister form of control."

Visit here for more detail

If you need to practise you're analysis skills this week's Public Works imageis currently on display at
the Museum of Contemporary Art, in the collection show titled We Call Them Pirates Out Here. House Painting: Blackburn (Large Version), which has been curated by David Elliott, this year's Biennale of Sydney artistic director. Please see the vertical file in the MSC library for the image.

Beating the dreaded exam

Well it's here, your first Visual Art exam. It's not an event to be feared if you're well prepared. Have a look at these hints for some last minute help.
  1. Use your time wisely; the first ten minutes allowed for reading time is the best time to analyse the source images.
  2. Always break your essays into manageable sections; 7 minutes planning, 50 minutes writing and 3 minutes proof reading.
  3. The easiest way to demonstrate your understanding of the source images is to support every statement with VISUAL EVIDENCE.
  4. Awesome essays have awesome first impressions. Start your essays with a THESIS STATEMENT in your introduction that informs the reader of your intentions in a clear and concise manner.
  5. Did I mention you need to PROOF READ?
Good luck this morning, don't panic and do your very best.

How connected are you to reviews of current exhibitions across Australia? Not very... never fear, you don't have to jet off across Australia to be exposed to a variety of quality exhibitions. Every week in The Weekend Australian newspaper reviews one of the best exhibitions on show somewhere across Australia.
Never heard of this newspaper?? Don't fear the library has a subscription and stored in the vertical files every week are both the weekly exhibition review and 'Public Works'; a weekly analysis of one of Australia's public artworks.
To hard to walk to the library?? Well luckily posted here every week will be a link to this review.

For the first review see here and happy reading!
